Logic - rules of inference question?

My question concerns the addition rule in the laws of inference. My teacher says that when preforming addition, you cannot add a compound proposition. So, if I had a preposition like P, would I be able to add (QvR) to it? And I NEED sources on this, because my teacher is kinda stubborn on this, even though it makes sense.
