Can my family doctor diagnose melanoma?

I am scared to death. After years of sun exposure, I guess I deserve it, but I have a spot on my shoulder that looks like what I see in photos of melanoma. I have a family doctor and have never been to a dermatologist. I don't see the doctor for just anything....but I know I have to. Can I start with my family doctor for this or is that silly? I know him and trust him and I'm scared. Ugh.
